Leaving Las Vegas Heading Back To The Chilly Shores Of Lake Superior

Winter is over or at least in most of the US.  We have spent the winter in Las Vegas and now will leave to return to the shores of Lake Superior.  It is still cool in my home town but time to head back to children and grand children.
I  will return to my kitchen and my appliances.  Time to start menu planning full force and start my project of cutting our eating budget.  We have cooked less here since dining in the casinos is so easy.

At this time we have a weekly budget of $150 for groceries, dining out and gas.  I hope to that we eat out less and cook more. The difference will partly go to paying off our van early.

Watch for future postings on my menu plans and shopping budget.

Good bye Las Vegas... Hello beautiful Lake Superior

Grocery Shopping and Meal Plans 4/18/13

Snowing again and feeling the desire to just cook, read and stay warm.  Prepared grocery list, found coupons and headed to grocery store.  Made one small trip yesterday for eggs, milk, butter and ice cream . Today did the main shopping trip at Cub foods.
Got all of this for $91.24 saving 24 percent.

Largest dollar amount was meat. We have a pot roast that will give us several meals, buy one get one free chicken breasts, 3 pounds of ground beef and bacon to top of the meat purchases.

We will put a pot roast in the crock pot tomorrow morning. From this we will get dinner and have left overs for hot beef sandwiches, maybe some fiestas and if anything left will turn into barb q beef sandwiches.
Hamburger will make meat loaf with left over being used for hash for breakfast. Beef and Bean enchiladas and calico bean hot dish.  Chicken will give us at least 4 meals, planning on chicken and vegetables for one meal and planning on trying a new recipe with some of the chicken.
Breakfast will be eggs and toast with bacon, pancakes and maybe French toast. Lunch is sandwiches and soup or left overs.
Most of what I bought should last over a week with only needing some milk, eggs and fruit to round of our meals

Grocery Store Round Up 3/10

Hard to believe another week has gone by. We went to Super One this week and bought a beef roast to make our Crock Pot Roast Beef... see previous posting.
We made a few different trips to the store over the week. Never out of our way just stopping in if we needed something when we passed and a planned trip to Super One and Target.

Next trip To Target
I had bought frozen foods at Target a couple weeks ago and received a $5.00 gift card. Thought I would pop into Target to see what the deals were and saw that if I bought 2 Charmin Bath Tissue for $9.99 each I would get a $5.00 gift card. Sounded good to me
Total spent $16.16 after using my $5.00 gift card and now I have another one to use in the future.
I did not get out to get a Sunday paper last weekend so need to stop in to Target tomorrow to see if I want to use my gift card. Did not get a photo of this trip or the milk trip.

Next stop was at Walgreens for milk. Sign on door said $3.09 but ran up at $3.29 which is what it was marked at milk display. I questioned it and got my milk for the $3.09. Lesson learned never be afraid to ask.

Final trip was to Super One for the bulk of our groceries.
2 bags of Malt O Meal cereal $3.99 each ( I used a $2.00 coupon off 2 bags) 50 oz bags
1 paper towel $1.97

Grocery Shopping Challenge Roundup 3/3

Time to total up what we spent on groceries this last week. Our week runs Friday to Thursday.

I started out at Walgreens. This week deals are slim for me. Nothing I really want and I had Walgreen rewards expiring within a couple of days. Hubby and stopped to see what I wanted to buy so I would not lose the $2.00 in register rewards.
Bought 1 bottle of Dawn dish soap and 2 cans of bumble bee tuna.
After flyer coupons and my $2.00 register rewards
cost me 25 cents out of pocket.
Retail value $5.25
cash out of pocket 25 cents
Then to Target
I went to Target to buy the Kellogg's Crunchy Nut Cereal at $2.99 a box. I used $1.00 Target coupon and $1.00 Kellogg's manufacture coupon bringing the cost down to 99 cents.
Bonus is that on the box is the Try me FREE rebate offer.
We will send in for the rebate as soon as possible. I bought one box for me and then in a separate transaction bought a box for my son to send in.

Besides the 2 boxes of cereal that cost me 99 cents each we also bought
7 frozen items to get the $5.00 gift card. They had 5 banquet pot pies at 64 cents each and 2 small turkey dinners at 84 cents each. I do not normally buy these but with getting the gift card I will put in freezer for a quick easy lunch in the future.
2 Kraft miracle whip on sale at $2.50 before 2 $0. 75 cent manufacture coupon and $1.00 Target coupon. This brought the cost down to $1.25 each.
Total spent $8.37 on food and I received a $5.00 gift card to use in the future plus I have the cereal to send in for rebate for myself and will give my son the other box to send in.

Then off to Cub Foods
Stopped at Cub foods to take advantage of a couple of deals plus we need bread. We picked up
1 loaf of bread $1.49
6 packages of Idaho potato envelopes $1.00 each using (2) $1.00 coupon off 3 packages
4 cans of vegetables 79 cents each using coupon 50 cent off coupon ( this was an expired coupon but my store takes them up to 3 months old)
3 packages of ground beef at $2.99 each using (3) $1.00 off 1 pound that was in a cub booklet making each pound $1.99
1 package of Velveeta $4.99 using $1.00 off coupon print here
2 Philly cooking Cream cheese $2.00 each using (2) coupons for a $1.50 off 1 making each 50 cents print here if still available. I had blogged on this a few days ago.
Total spent $21.14 with savings of $7.50 or 26 percent

1 quick stop at Walgreens for milk at $2.79 cheapest in the area and as we passed a gas station saw Sara Lee bread offered at $1.99.

Total spent for the week was 34.54

Grocery Shopping Challenge 1/13/11

Friday is when I do my grocery shopping round up from the last week. How did I do. We have a grocery budget of $60.00 a week for the two of us. Sounds like a lot doesn't it. But less than what the goverment lists for a family of two senior citizens on the thrifty side.

My goal is to see if I can cut this down even more so I can build up our emergency fund.

I will need to use these next week so I do not lose them when they expire. I am hoping walgreens has some good deals this next week but what I see posted so far does not look good. Eat From The Pantry Challenge

Yesterday I posted my goals this next year regarding our grocery budget plus some personal goals. Today I read the post at Money Saving Mom . She and FishMama are putting out a challenge to eat out of the pantry, freezer and refrigerator from Jan 1 to Jan 31. Cutting spending on groceries and put the difference to charity, debt or savings.

Those who are joining in are linking their posts and setting up their own challenges and plans.
http://www.moneysavingmom.com/money_saving_mom/2009/12/eat-from-the-pantry-challenge-my-goals-and-plans-and-come-link-up-yours-too.html
Hubby and I talked about it tonight and think we can cut our costs and put the extra into our savings plan for $1000 emergency fund. So instead of $62.50 I will cut this down as close to 50 percent as possible or 31.25 a week.

1. we will be buying dairy and produce as needed each week

2 we do not have a big freezer so will buy some meat. We buy a rotisserie chicken every week and will continue to do this plus what is else is needed for my menu plans.

3 plan menus around what I do have in the pantry and in refrigerator

4. I will allow myself to buy items that are free or close to free.

5. We do go out to eat on Sunday's with family plus again during the week for lunch. This comes from another envelope. I would like to see how I can cut this back during January adding that to our emergency fund.

If you are interested in joining us post your challenge on your blog and just comment here and at Money Saving Mom . Please go to Money Saving Mom and read the other posts. Everyone is coming up with their own plan and will be sharing recipes and ideas. Should be fun to see how we all do during January.
So between now and January 1st I will take stock of my pantry and plan some menu ideas around what I have. Anyone have any ideas for corn flakes and tomato soup. I am really stocked up on these thanks to good deals and coupons.

Grocery Cart Challenge Balancing the Food Budget

My shopping is sporatic. Some weeks I buy hardly anything and then we may have a mega shopping trip and I am there almost every day looking for deals.
I keep all receipts so I can see what and where we are spending our food money.

Part of our life is going out in the day to hunt for treasures to sell on eBay. This is always over the noon hour so on these days we eat out. I know we could cut back and bring a sandwich but to us eating out is part of the experience. Our treasure hunting is not on a daily basis, since we do part time work for my nephew and this can get in the way of hunting, but is sure money which means food and gas money.

So back to the budget. We have a weekly budget of $125.00 for the two of us for groceries and paper supplies etc and eating out..

My week runs Sunday to Saturday

Week 1 ... 10/4 to 10/10 Groceries $5.45

Week 2 .... 10/11 to 10/17 Groceries $63,64

Week 3 ... 10/18 to 10/24 Groceries 0 money spent

Week 4 ... 10/25 to 10/31 Groceries $117.19 ( Mega Sale Week)

Total for these 4 weeks was $186.28 or an average of $46.57

Week 1 ... 10/4 to 10/10 Eating Out $ 56.66

Week 2 .... 10/11 to 10/17 Eating Out $ 56.99

Week 3 ... 10/18 to 10/24 Eating Out $107.49

Week 4 ... 10/25 to 10/31 Eating Out $77.44

Total for these 4 weeks $298.58 or an average of $74.65

This averages out $121.22 a week so with in our weekly budget when averaged out.

Interesting to put in on paper and look at it. You see what really happened in this household. How are you doing with staying within your budget
Next topic of discussion will be how can hubby and I eat out at lunch time the days we hunt for treasures and bring down that cost.
I have joined in on grocery cart challenge. Take a look at how others are doing. Leave a comment here and there to let others know you have stopped by.
