What's For Dinner Tonight?

This is always the question of the day. What should we have for dinner?

We had a roasted chicken we bought from Randalls yesterday.

What else is in the cupboard?

Egg noodles, can of chicken gravy and a can of mushroom soup.

Add to this some salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder. And from the refrigerator the remainder of sour cream.

Saute the chicken in a little of butter,add your spices then add the mushroom soup.

add the can of gravy,

Just as the noodles are nearing the right texture you can add the sour cream. And what you get is a tasty quick , inexpensive dinner.

Today's Walgreens Transaction

Some days it is not easy to be a fan of Walgreens. I had Walgreens Easy Bucks that expired tomorrow, so I wanted to use them up.

Just how much tooth paste and shampoo does two people need. Every week it usually the same stuff offered to try and get you in the store.

Today I thought okay buy the

Carefree Ultra Protection 16 ct Sale price $1.99 Register Rewards $1.99 = FREE

first store no 16 ct every other size but not what I needed.

Then thought okay dh can try the Men's Zone 6 Blade Razor system Sale price is $3.99 Register Rewards is $3.99 so equals FREE none at this first store either.

Go to second store and No Carefree is right quanity and no Razors. By now I am tired after a long day.

At this store move on to see if I can find the Reach Ultra Clean Floss sale price is $2.99 Register Rewards is $2.00 final cost is 99 cents.

Picked up hubby some Dentek Easy Brush at $2.99 get 2nd one free so I can at least get something for my expiring register rewards.

Of course the Ultra Clean Floss is not the exact one so no rewards come out.

They call the manager and he wants to just refund me the cost of the floss but since I paid for it Register Rewards that does not work and he hands me the out of pocket cash I gave him and thinks that is okay.

I do not think that he even knew that I think of these rewards as cash. I told him that was not acceptable and finally took back my rewards and left my hubbys Dentex Easy Brush with him.

By now I am frustrated, tired and just want to head home. I know if I do not go to day I will probably loose my rewards. I have to work tomorrow and hubby may have to work.

I suggest we stop at home change into shorts and comfortable shoes and try just one more store.

Off we go and what I change this store is.

They had the Razor I wanted , The right size Carefree panti liners and the dental floss. I added the Dentek Easy Brush buy one and get 2nd one free.

Gave them my $8.00 register rewards and an extra 4.29 in cash. I walked out with $8.00 new register rewards to use next time.

CVS Transactions

Stopped off at a CVS yesterday to do one of the deals. I had no CVS bucks left so was starting with my on cash.

I picked up 2 Speed stick Deodrants one for hubby and one for me.

They were on sale for $2.49 each and I had printed 2 coupons for $1.50 off each.

Bought 2 Carefree Panti products at $3.79 each and had no coupons to cut the cost of these.

The last time I had been in CVS I had received a coupon for a Free Gold Emblem Candy or Nuts up to a $5.00 value. They had Gold Emlem Cashew nuts on sale 2 for $7.00 so picked up one that ended up free.

Total after coupons my cash out of pocket was 9.99 including tax.

I received back $2.00 CVS bucks for the 2 deodrants, $7.58 for the 2 panti liners which of course totals $9.58 and as a bonus I recieved another coupon for Free Gold Emblem Candy up to 15 oz value $3.00. That coupon is not valid till 9/2 and does not mention nuts, but I will ask to see. I love my nuts.

Tonight's Dinner " Adeline's Porcupines Updated"

Tonight we are having my first mother in law Adeline's Porcupines updated by a few spices.

Adeline's Recipe


1 1/2 pounds of hamburger bought at Randalls $1.99 a pound
1/2 cup of rice

1/2 cup chopped onions
1 Egg blended
1 Tablespoons of mustard bought at Walmart with coupon almost free
1 tsp of salt
1/2 tsp of pepper
Combine these ingredients well. Form into small meat balls. Place in a baking dish / casserole. Combine 1 can of tomato soup plus 1 can of water and add.

I added 1 tsp of basil, I have no onion in house but I had picked up a bottle of Mccormick Garlic and Onion Medley at a Kroger sale and I added 1 tsp of this instead. I had 1/2 a large can of Tomato Sauce left over from making Chili earlier this week so used that up instead of the soup. We also added 1 can of diced tomatoes spiced with basil, garlic and oregano. Cover and back for 1 hour at 350 degrees.

We added some mashed potatoes and green beans for a Yummy thrifty dinner. Plus being there is only 2 of us we have half the meatballs left for easy quick dinner another night this week.

Brought back great memories of my first mother in law Adeline cooking in the kitchen.

Her food was simple but tasty. She loved her family and her home and fed us well with little money.

It was normal for my first husband, myself and our two boys to spend most Sunday's at Adeline and Arne's home having Sunday lunch. We would spend the afternoon there and then off to my parents for a few hours and probably dinner.

Times were different then. This is 40 years ago. You ate at home most of the time. Going out to eat was for special times. Then when we would go out to eat it was to the neighbor drive in for hamburgers, french fries and a root beer.

Now my hubby and I think it is normal to go out to eat and we eat out to much. And we know we eat out more than we should. We consider this our entertainment and that is how we justify it. When we do go out it is lunch time and inexpensive places. We will be working on cutting down on this expense.

Well back to Adeline. She would make porcupines (meat balls with rice). Tonight we will have Adeline's porcupines with some additional spicing.

My Walgreen Shopping Trip #1

I ended up by a Walgreen's today and thought might as well go in for my first trip. There is not much that is of interest to me this week to get rewards. Will see how that changes by end of the week

Today I purchased

2 Scotch Mailers had 2 coupons for 50 cents off each and Walgreen coupon

3 Barilla Pasta 3 for $3.00 only had 2 coupons

1 Rimmel Mascara used 1 coupon $2.00 ... they are 40 percent off . The price marked down was $4.19 so this cost me $2.19

I used a $4.00 Walgreen Register Rewards from last week

total out of pocket was 77 cents was partially tax.

My total savings $14.30

I still have more rewards to use up before they expire.

Don't let your Register Rewards expire. It is useful money to buy groceries or what ever you need at Walgreens.

My Mega Kroger Grocery Trip To Get $5.00 Off Purchase

Once again went in with my game plan we stopped at Krogers . I did not need much but could not pass up.

We bought for our 10 items

6 Hamburger Helpers used my 2 coupons 75 cents off 3 boxes

2 boxes of Cheerios using $1.00 coupon off 2 boxes

2 Bottles of Pepsi Cola

also picked up

1 bag of Tidy Cat Litter with $1.00 coupon off 1 back

and 6 cans of Chicken of the Sea in oil for 59 cents each

After all my coupons and getting $5.00 off my purchase my total out of pocket is $12.11 with savings of $13.48 or 53 percent

One More Trip to Walgreens for $25.00 Shopping Trip

I had planned to not do this trip since I was down to $2.00 register rewards but in the end I could not pass up the opportunity to get a coupon for $5.00.

Went in with a plan to spend $25.00 before taxes and get back as many rewards as I could.

I bought the following

1 Soft Soap at $3.99 get back $4.00

3 7 up products 12 packs for $11.00 and get back $3.00

4 Kraft Easy Mac cups ( some had said they got $1.00 reward and some reported they did not get it .. I did not get it but had coupons of 55 cents off 2 and Walgreen's coupon for $1.00 off 4 so think I did just fine.

2 Skippy Peanut butters had coupon for $1.00 off 2 jars

They were out of Fructis Shampoos and conditioners so picked up 2 Jiff Peanut Butters to get to over $25.00. We can always use for peanut butters in this house.

After coupons and my lone $2.00 rewards my total out of pocket was $24.83 and I got back $12.00 in register rewards to use next week

Walgreens Shopping Trip Today

I popped into a Walgreens as we passed by while on errands to use up my rewards before they expired.

They had cans of Glade Air Spray on sale at 99 cents each. Bought 4 cans and used 2 coupons of 75 cents off 2 cans. Picked up a nylon body scrubber with free body wash sample attached.

After using my coupons and rewards my total out of pocket was 52 cents.

Out of the register came a coupon for a free moisturizer they are offering. The young clerk pointed out the coupon and offered it right away.

Along with my receipt came a coupon for FREE Gold Emblem Cookies/ Nuts up to 12 oz starting 8/26 plus a coupon Save $1.00 on any Excedrin .. lets add a manufacture coupon and see what we can find on the shelf.

Eat Dinner and Get Your Money Back

Awhile back I printed a copy of the rebate for Tyson Skillet Creations Meal Kit. The rebate lets you buy the meal up to $8.99 and get your money back.
Tyson is offering a rebate for a FREE Tyson Skillet Creations (up to $8.99) when you purchase by 10/31/2009


We found this at Walmart for $5.00 with a dollar off coupon got it for $4.00.


Tonight we thought we should fix it and see what we thought.


Taste is good but not much there. Especially the Chicken. Feeds 3 people. You get 6 tortillas, green and red peppers and onion to saute with the chicken.


We added our salsa, sour cream and grated Mexican cheese and had a quick easy dinner.


Next time I will just buy the products and fix it myself.


Probably in the end will cost more but will have more ingredients and be more filling.
