Lets Make Some Cookies 1956 Recipe From General Foods Day 3 Chocolate Flake Cookies

Nothing warms up a house and the tummy than home made cookies.

Today we are sharing the recipe from 1956 recipe book Cookies Galore




CHOCOLATE FLAKE COOKIES 

1 1/2 cups sifted flour
1/2 tsp soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 squares Baker Unsweetened Chocolate melted
1/4 cup milk
1 1/2 cups Grape Nuts Flakes or Post Toasties

Sift flour once, measure, add soda and salt and sift again.  Cream shortening , add sugar gradually, and cream together until light and fluffy.  Add egg and beat well.  Then add chocolate and blend.  Add flour, alternately with milk, mixing well.  Add cereal and blend.  Drop by tsp onto greased baking sheet; flatten with fork, if desired.  Bake in moderate oven (375 degree)  8 to 10 minutes. Makes 4 dozen cookies

Lets Make Some Cookies 1956 Recipe From General Foods Day 2 Orange Crispies

Today we are sharing the recipe from 1956 recipe book Cookies Galore



ORANGE CRISPIES

1 1/4 cups Post 40 % Bran Flakes
1 1/4 cups sifted flour
1 tsp Calumet Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Salt
1 1/2 tsp grated orange rind
1/2 cup butter or other shortening
1 cup Sugar
1 egg
1 tbsp milk
1tbsp orange juice

* Or use 1 1/4 cups Post Toasties or Grape Nut Flakes

Crush cereal. Sift flour once, measure, add baking powder and salt, and sift again.  Add orange rind

to shortening and cream thoroughly.  Add sugar gradually and cream together until light and fluffy.

Add egg and beat thoroughly.  Then blend in milk and orange juice.  Add flour mixture gradually,

blending well.  Stir in cereal.  Chill until firm enough to roll.  Roll 1/8 inch thick on lightly floured

board.  Cut with floured 2 1/2 inch cutter.  Baked on greased baking sheet in hot oven ( 425 degree)

 6 to 8 minutes.  Makes 3 to 4 dozen cookies.

Note if desired 1/2 cup dark corn syrup may be substituted for 1/2 cup of the sugar.

 Increase flour to 1 1/2 cups and omit milk and orange juice.

Lets Make Some Cookies 1956 Recipe From General Foods Day 1 Butterscotch Dream Bars

Cookies were always best when my mama or grandma made them.

Today I will share a wonderful recipe from the Cookies Galore Recipe Book dated 1956.

BUTTERSCOTCH DREAM BARS

1/2 cup butter or other shortening
1/2 cup of Grape Nuts
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 egg slightly beaten
1 teaspoon of vanilla
1 cup of sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon Calumet baking powder
1/8 tsp soda
1/4 tsp salt

     Melt shortening in saucepan.  Add cereal and cook about 1 minute. Add sugar and mix well.  Cool.  Stir in egg and vanilla.  Sift flour once, measure , add baking powder, soda , salt and sift again.. Add flour mixture to cereal mixture, a small amount at a time mixing well after each addition.
Spread into greased 8 x 8 x

2 inch pan and bake in moderate oven 350 degrees about 25 minutes. Cool.  Cut into bars.  Makes 24

COCONUT DREAMS  Use above recipe . With last addition of flour , blend in 3/4 cup Bakers coconut cut into fine pieces.

DATE DREAMS .  Use above recipe for Butterscotch Dream Bars.  With last addition of flour , stir in 1/2 cup cut dates.
