Garage Sales ~ Waking To The Smell of Fresh Bread

I love to garage sale with my dh. Hunting for treasures to buy and sell on the Internet. During our hunt a couple of weeks ago I noticed a bread maker that look like it had hardly been used if ever. Asking price was $20.00, I tried to bargain with her but no go with reduced price, I gave in and after giving her a twenty dollar bill it was mine.
Since then I  have been making my own bread. Mix up at night, set the timer and wake to the smell of bread baking. So far we have made 4 loaves and it is better tasting than anything I can buy at the grocery store.
Our one problem was trying to cut it. We planned to get out the stores to see if we could find something to hold the bread while we cut it.
Well that was solved this last Friday. While at a garage sale I noticed another bread machine for sale and next to it was a contraption to put your loaf of bread in and slots to put your knife to cut the bread nice and straight.  I asked if I could buy the bread slicer only and for $1.00 it was mine.
What a great help this is. My bread is sliced nice and straight and goes into the toaster so much easier.

I am always looking for needed items at garage sales, besides recyling the item I keep the savings in my pocket book.
I look forward to making my own pizza crust soon using my bread maker to mix the dough.

Thanks for stopping by and if you see a garage sale sign I hope that you will take a moment and see if there are any treasures waiting for you.  Grace

HUNTING FOR COOKBOOKS AT WEEKEND SALES

I love to hunt for items to resell on the Internet. One of my favorite items to look for is cookbooks.

This weekend these are the four I picked out to resell. They were found at a church book sale.

We found a Betty Crocker Cookbook , Rachael Ray, Fanny Farmer Cookbook and a White House Cookbook.

But until they sell they are mine to read and enjoy. Thanks for stopping by to visit.

Recently Found at Garage Sale and Sold On eBay Vintage Handmade Quilt

Recently found at a garage sale and sold on eBay is this pretty vintage hand made quilt.  Less than a month ago hubby and I were out on garage sale rounds and I came across this pretty quilt. Seller told me her aunt had bought it years ago at an estate sale. Looking at it I could tell that it had hardly been used and was in beautiful shape.

I bought it for $5.00 and tried to sell on auction twice with no luck.  Last night it ended for the second time with no sale.  Shortly later I received an email from a buyer that had missed out on it.  Power outage he says.  This morning I relisted it at my asking price of $29.99 buy it now and emailed him.

Shortly later I had a sale and it was paid for with pay pal. Off it goes to Mississippi tomorrow morning.

You just never know what you will find in a small garage on a Saturday afternoon.

How is your treasure hunting going?  Thanks for stopping by to visit, hope to see you again real  soon. Grace

Garage Sale Find Nautical Ship Vintage Rhinestone Jewelry Found

Good morning everyone, happy Sunday
Yesterday was another garage sale day for hubby and me. We started out with newspaper in hand. I had listd the closest 6 garage sales in order. Each one was a dud. Either their was nothing for us to resell or it was so over priced there would be no money to be made. My rule of thumb is double at least. If it is a larger priced item I lower that goal at times.
As the day waned away we started to find a few items. Garage sales can end any where from 12 to 2 so hunting has to be fast and fierce.
At one sale hubby spotted 2 lamp shades. One would go on a vintage lamp we put into our home. Once on we have decided not quite perfect, to large maybe. Will remain till I find another one to my liking. Second lamp shade was a brown wicker one. Hubby said he would put on the auction table and hope to make a little money. I was not so sure. But must of been karma because at end of day I spotted this nautical ship that was a lamp. These do sell at the auction house. And it was missing its lamp shade.

Here it is cleaned up and sporting the wicker lamp shade.  It will go to the auction house in September.
As the day ended we stopped at one of our last sales. They had advertised decoys but were all sold old.
On the check out table were baggies of jewelry. Colorful rhinestone jewelry she had bought years ago from a flea marketer seller. Best of all it was end of the day and she was dealing. I got all of this for $25.00. The silver colored piece needs work but otherwise everything is ready to be sold at one of my three outlets ( eBay, antique store case or auction house).  No marks on any of the pieces but still pretty and desirable.
These are just a few of our found treasures. Thanks for stopping by to visit and hope to see you again real soon.. Grace

FALL IS IN THE AIR AND GARAGE SALE SEASON IS BUSY

While fall is now in the air there are still lots of garage sales listed in the newspaper or on craig's list. It seems everyone is trying to get their garage sale done or even an extra one accomplished.
I grabbed the newspaper and hubby is on Craig's list. Together we make out a list of some of the sales we will go to.
It is now Saturday and we have all ready been to garage sales on Thursday and Friday. Thursday is quiet but there is always a few here and there. Friday and Saturday the main hunting days for us.
Rules are have gas in the tank, some water in the car, small bills in the wallet and aways know where the closest clean bathrooms are in every area of town.
Main goal is to find clean useful or vintage items we can resell either on line or at local auctions. If it is really cool it may even go to my case at the antique mall.
Some of my finds that will be passed on are 4 vintage dolls ( I have washed their faces so they look a little more desirable). They were a $1.00 each at a garage sale.
next is a vintage Big Boy bank. Cute and collectible. Not big dollars but hopefully I can make a profit. He came from a church sale benefit for kids with cancer. $2.00 is more than I would of liked to pay but good cause and maybe I will get some profit. Also found a small oil painting for $3.00 plus other items to sell including some costume jewelry.  All of these will be in a local auction after Labor day.
Hope that you are having a great garage sale season and if you are reselling I would love to hear your stories.
We have even found some items for our new apartment home. We are decorating mid century. Perfect for two seniors who lived mid century. Those were great times. Great music and first crushes. Oh the memories. Some days I share these stories with my granddaughters. Some of them are shared too often and when they repeat them to me we both have to laugh.
I will share some pictures of my mid century finds soon.

Have a great day and thanks for stopping by.. Grace

THE JOY AND FUN OF GARAGE SALES LOOKING FOR TREASURES

I love garage sales and with our short summer here in Minnesota that fun is short lived. Yesterday was beautiful. Warm and sunny but not to hot. Before leaving home I filled a small cooler with water and my wallet with some twenties and off we went.
We are on the hunt for items to resell and a couple of items for our selves. First stop was an estate sale run by the family. I love those, you can visit with the family and get items at reasonable prices. First find was a true treasure a paint by number nautical scene. It was painted by her uncle Art and since my dear daddy's name was Art it had to be mine. A while back I saw a room decorated with paint by number nautical scenes. I can not remembe if I saw this on the Internet or in a magazine, but it stuck with me. I know have the start of a collection. I may never find another reasonable paint by number but I have at least one. And I only paid $1.00 for this art piece.
At the same sale I found a vintage brown Samsonite suit case and it matches my travel case that I told you about a few days ago. These will be priced and put in the antique store. This suit case was also only $1.00, what a buy. I found a styrfoam head for 50 cents. Just what I wanted to display my hair bonnet from a vintage hair dryer. I had bought this great vintage GE hairdryer the night before in a box lot for $1.00. It is now up for sale on eBay with a starting bid of $9.99. Mint green in color and with its original box it should sell.

I found so many great items yesterday but it is time to wrap this up and get out of my home to go hunting again. I will share more later. Have a great day and thanks for stopping by.. Grace
PS please do not tell my sons I have started another collection ( vintage paint by number).

THE THRILL OF THE HUNT AT GARAGE SALES FINDING COSTUME JEWELRY AND OTHER TREASURES

This morning hubby and I took off to go to some garage sales. In hand is a my newspaper with address circled for today's search.
We are out looking for items to resell at the local weekly auction, at the antique mall in my glass case and on eBay or Amazon.
We skip the sales that mention clothing especially children's clothes and head for those that say household, jewelry, books and misc.

I especially like those sales in old houses that are put on by the family members selling off a relatives belongings. Some times you will find the best deals there.
First stop was that type of a sale. Grass is fairly high, you can see that the home is not lived in and we head to the garage. Not much there and then we are informed there are items in the house.
I buy 2 corningware casseroles with covers, church cook books and miscellanous glassware any where from 50 cents to $1.00 each.
Next off to the basement. There I find more small pretty glassware in blue and red and then I spot the jewelry in the corner. There are two men already bent over the boxes of jewelry looking for treasures. Once they are done it is my turn. For hardly anything I end up with a clear large rhinestone brooch, rhinestone clip on earings and miscellanous pieces of religious metals. Two of the pieces are marked silver and the other is gold filled. Add to my pile 2 large pictures from a pile in the corner.
I think I am done, but then I tell hubby I want one more look at the jewelry. By the time I get back to the basement some guy has bought the rest of the jewelry for $10.00.
I paid 50 cents for my few pieces of jewelry, and am happy with my purchases.
Next stop that morning is the auction house where we unload most of the items to our table. The sale is Monday night and it will be fun to see how much our items sell for.
I love garage sales and sadly we only have a few months of sales and then the snow will start. Until then I am having fun searching for treasures to resell. Above is a picture of the jewelry, every thing else is already at the auction house.
Hope that you all have fun on your searches at the garage sale and estate sales.
Thanks for stopping by I would love to hear about your garage sale finds in the comment area.. Grace

TIME TO START COLLECTING CASH RATHER THAN STUFF

Good morning everyone
We are getting ready for our garage sale starting tomorrow. I am sorting through STUFF to put out for sale. I have a lot of costume jewelry I have been collecting to resell and have a lot I have not sold or never put out to sell. Lots of stuff not a lot of treasures just little vintage earrings and brooches.
With Mad Men show popular and that time frame popular in decorating and dressing I hope to sell some of my brooches.
Found a pretty pair of earrings last night marked Hobe in a square box. They are now priced at $35.00 and will go into my case in the antique mall. I bought them some time and finally got around to look them up and price.
I have piles of vintage photos and post cards to go through. I have been putting some of them up for sale at a local auction and will continue to do so. Last week I sold a small album with CDV and a few tin types for $75.00.
Right now we are busy working to get our $1,000 deposit together for our new apartment. I think of this as money in the bank we just can not get at it as long as we live in our apartment.
We are now up to $130.00 in the bank with $870 to go.
Are you looking to build up some cash reserve. Look around your home and see if you could have a garage sale. David Ramsey says " Sell some Stuff" We all have so much Stuff laying around. Time to start collecting  some cash rather than stuff.

Time to get back to getting ready for my garage sale.. thanks for stopping by.. Grace

Rare 1923 Vintage Recipe Book Found At Estate Sale

I love Estate sales, garage sales, thrift stores and antique stores. We are always on the hunt for some treasure to buy and resell on the Internet to help suppliment our income.

Yesterday we were out hunting and stopped at a small estate/garage sale. Boy was it chilly. November in Northern Minnesota is not really garage sale time.

Well in this garage is a pile of books and as I look through them I found craft books on quilting, basket making and a couple of recipe/cookbooks. One of them was " The Franklin Sugar Sweetmeat book printed in 1923. Small recipe book and only 64 pages.

I will be listing it tonight on eBay but until it sell will share some of the recipes with you. It is rare and I have only found 2 other copies for sale on the Internet so far.

Tonight I am sharing a recipe for French Meringue Tart

6 egg whites, 1/2 tsp of vanilla, 2 1/2 Franklin Granulated sugar or 3 cups of Franklin Powdered sugar, 1/4 tsp almond extract, 1 pint of whipping cream
Beat the egg whites stiff and dry, add half the sugar and beat again until the mixture will hold its shape, then gradually whip in the rest of the sugar and the flavoring. Line two layer cake pans with paper wet on the underside and spread the mixture lightly on the paper. Bake in a very moderate oven until firm and just tinged brown. Put together wtih whipped cream or ice cream and pile whipped cream on top. Decorate with fruit and serve very cold

Garage Sales can Save You Money or even Make You Money

I love garage sales also know as yard sales, moving sales, rummage sales or tag sales. I have been a garage sale junkie for over 30 years. I have held them and I have been to thousands of them.
The main reason I go is to hunt for treasures to sell on eBay. I have sold on eBay for years. I read other blogs and see people complain of the cost to sell on eBay. Yes the costs have gone up but just think of it. When you put up something you want to sell it can possibly be viewed by people all over the United States or world wide. And of course you can also find things that may interest you from around the US. ( Just watch the shipping costs )
Of course we also love the thrift stores and that is a way we spend part of many days.
We deal in mainly books ( even owned a used book store in Minnesota for 12 + years) Those are some of my favorite memories. My store and my customers. I also am interested in vintage postcards, photos and other items of interest.
Well back to garage sales.. this is a great way to find treasures and even what you need for daily life. You can find clean Blue Jeans hardly worn, designer clothes and purses. dishes, furniture and of course the collectible.

First you need to find them. Look in your daily paper, check out Craigs list. Craigs list has a tab under items for sale for garage sales. Craigs list can be good and is free and sometimes the poster does not follow through with their sale and this can be a waste of time and gas. And then just driving around and looking for signs is a fun way.

Go early, the best things can go first but then you can sometimes get a better price later in the day or the second day.

Bring small bills and coins. No one wants your twenty dollar bill.

Do not be afraid to ask if they are open to a lower price. Last Saturday we stopped at a sale. It is hot in Texas and they have been there for a couple of hours already. They have about 8 nice cookbooks that I can sell on eBay, amazon and other sites I sell on. They have a price of $2.00 and $3.00 each. That is not a bad price considering they are fairly new, clean and hard covers but I need to buy at a better price to sell. I nicely ask are you open to offers. I can give you a dollar a piece for the hard covers and then offer a dollar for 2 or 3 soft cover cook books. They say yes. I am happy and so are they. They do not have to bring these cook books back into the house and I have something to offer some one on the Internet who wants this cook book and even with the shipping cost may be the only way for them to buy.

Wear comfortable shoes , clothes and keep your purse close to you. Better yet wear a belly pack.

Bring your own bottle of water. Some sellers offer water but they want a dollar a bottle.

One thing I will buy is lemonade from some cute little kid. And if the glass is large I will give them an extra quarter as a tip and tell them I want that part to go into their savings bank. That excites them and their mother and makes me smile. Three or four smiles for a quarter is well worth it.

Of course you need to take gas into account so try to find neighborhood, block, multi-family or even city sales so that you can visit many sales in the same area. My hubby and I love to garage sale so this is entertainment to us and of course part of our business.

There are some things you do not want to buy at a garage sale. First thought is a used mattress. Others say shoes but I have found great shoes barely used for myself or to sell on eBay. Check items over really careful. Look for stains, tears and in books I also look through it. I do not want books underlined, highlighted or moldy.

If you looking for items for children be sure it is not a recalled item. You can go to check out http://www.recalls.gov/ for the most recent recalls issued.

If you are searching for furniture know your measurements and take a small tape measure with you. If something is electric ask to plug it in. If I am buying Cd's I bother to look inside to make sure CD is in there. People forget them in machines and do not check before selling.

So have fun stopping at garage sales and not only are you saving money, you are helping someone else declutter and you may even find some sweet treasure.

If you are in need of a cook book or whatever visit me at http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/turnabout01_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZ

Well this is some of my ideas and tips. Happy hunting and be safe
